Evelyn Goude Smiley, 73, of Roanoke Rapids died Sunday, March 13, 2011.

Evelyn was born in McColl, SC, the daughter of the late Joseph Hebrew Goude, Sr. and Mittie Bell Jordan Goude. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Washington ''Bo'' Smiley, and a daughter, Virginia Gail Walthall.

Mrs. Smiley is survived by two daughters, Brenda Matthews Clary and her fiancé, Rocky Sims, of South Hill, VA and Geraldine Renea Rawlings of Roanoke Rapids; her son, Robert Edward Matthews, Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Roanoke Rapids; her stepdaughter, Diane Hoffman of Katy, TX; two stepsons, Tim Smiley and his wife, Pam, of Seaboard and George Mark Smiley and his wife, Evelyn, of Roanoke Rapids; seven grandchildren, Joseph Clary, Christopher Rawlings, Tiffany Rawlings, Renee’ Pearce, Nicole Rooker, Robert Edward Matthews III, and Christina Matthews; seven great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Chappell of Roanoke Rapids and Agnes Hardy of Stuart, VA; and her brother, J. H. Goude, Jr. of Drakes Branch, VA.

Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 15, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home of her son, 181 Wendover Lane, Roanoke Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
